Course Description: Helping students make the most of their vision requires the right tools, intentional instruction, and ongoing assessment. This course explores the role of optical devices in supporting access to print and the visual environment, along with strategies for building confidence through structured training, progress monitoring, and meaningful IEP goals. Participants will learn how to integrate clinical low vision data with educational assessments like the FVA and LMA, recognize when updates are needed, and adapt instruction to meet changing student needs. By connecting practical teaching methods with updated assessment practices, this course equips professionals to foster successful outcomes for students with low vision.

Objectives:
- Identify key types of near and distance optical devices commonly used by students with visual impairments.
- Explain the importance of consistent device training in supporting student access to the visual environment.​
- Determine when assessment updates to low vision evaluations may be necessary based on student progress and changing needs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of current training methods used to support students’ use of prescribed devices.
