Refreshable Braille Displays

Considering the benefits (such as motivation, increased finger strength, auditory feedback, etc.) of incorporating a refreshable braille display (RBD) into instruction with emerging braille readers, what age are Teachers of the Visually Impaired introducing RBDs to students? What resources are used to make this determination? What barriers do you face?

This is a great question that comes up often from TVIs and families. I tend to see this from the standpoint that introducing braille displays is a readiness based decision. As soon as a student demonstrates skills like proficiency in braille ready and writing (as determined by LMA and similar data) and technology responsibility and ability to listen to auditory prompts and explore digital menu structures, it is a great time to get started!
