December Southwest Question of the Month: Physical Education

Good morning and happy December, Southwest!

What is a resource that you would recommend for supporting students in PE programs and helping them to stay active and healthy?

To help one of our blind students participate more fully in PE we recently purchased a running tether and a butterfly bell ball (a ball I would call a four-square ball or a cherry ball with a bell in it) made by Handi Life Sports. We have in the past gotten tennis balls with bells, ping pong bells with bells, and beeping balls the size of a basketball from APH.

Thank you so much for your comments and for the ideas from Handi Life Sports!

Hi, Jenny!

This is not a resource, but one of my staff members who has worked with students with VI shared a strategy that an APE teacher passed down to her. You will need an empty large water bottle with a sound making source (i.e. bell) and a thick cord to tie at the top of the water bottle. Make the cord long enough for a student to kick the bottle away from his/her body. The student holds the cord and is able to practice his/her kicking skills while staying in one place.

Best,
Rosa
