Enroll in the Hive course
Course Description: The employment rate for individuals with visual impairments is approximately 37% and remains relatively unchanged for decades. This course helps to guide educators to move beyond triaged transition planning with the goal of changing the trajectory for all students. Enroll to better understand what is meant by career readiness skills for high school students, shared responsibilities, and how to move quickly given short service times with students.
ACVREP credit hours: 1.5
Objectives
- Define career readiness.
- Identify barriers of employment for individuals with visual impairments.
- Examine a career readiness checklist for high school age students.
- Describe how to embed career readiness skills within IEP transition plans.
The majority of the students I serve who are ready to transition are not adequately prepared for college or employment. Many rely primarily on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which has become a source of comfort and security. They often fear losing this safety net if they pursue work or postsecondary education after high school. While some parents express a desire for their children to continue their education, it is frequently the students themselves who are reluctant. I believe that, as parents, we must teach our children to become self-sufficient and responsible adults, not only for their own benefit but also to enable them to contribute productively to society.
Developing career readiness and understanding its associated benefits and factors should begin early in life, facilitated by opportunities for exploration and aspiration.
