Course Description: Imagine a world where every moment becomes an opportunity for a child to engage with literacy—through song, play, and daily routines. This course will help you harness those moments to nurture early literacy for infants, toddlers, and young children who are blind or have low vision. Using the Laptime and Lullabies Kit, you’ll gain practical tools and strategies to collaborate with teams, incorporate developmentally appropriate activities, and explore new possibilities for literacy-rich experiences.

Objectives

  • Compare the traditional definition of literacy with the expanded definition of literacy.
  • Identify the 12 major components of early literacy as outlined in the Laptime and Lullabies Parent Handbook.
  • Identify the unique considerations for children with visual impairments in developing early language and literacy skills.
  • Describe ways to collaborate with team members to nurture early literacy development for young children who are blind or have low vision.
  • Describe how to incorporate developmentally appropriate literacy activities into routines for young children who are blind or have low vision.
