Math Worksheets

Recently I had the opportunity to demonstrate the Monarch at a district in our state. TSVIs wanted the Monarch to be able to display the graphics from a Math Worksheet. I opened the file as a text file & as a PDF using Tactile viewer on the Monarch but it did not display the graphic from the worksheet. They say secondary teachers are not using the textbooks adopted by their district or that the district adopts online material that is not accessible. What could I have done differently? If the Monarch were to access the online websites would it create the graphics there for mathematiccs or science?

Good Morning,
I’d be curious to look at the PDF file to see what the issue is, It could also be that when the file is opened that the default intensity is too low and you will need to use the “Show more detail” command. Space +M will bring up these specific commands in Tactile viewer. If you’d like for us to test the file, feel free to send the PDF to jmartin@aph.org and I can take a look.

Good morning,
It is possible that the file shared with you is not technically accessible. In this case you may have been able to open the website content, but the graphics in the content was designed for a visual learner. Therefore, it would be necessary for a braillest, TVI, or tactile graphics designer to create those graphics as PDFs and emboss them for student access.

In situations as the one you described, it is helpful to think of the Monarch as an instant embosser - the transcription process of transcribing the math content is similar to as if you were transcribing it to be embossed.

With regard to math content that is instantly translated into Nemeth or UEB on the Monarch, the file needs to be created in a MS Word file with math imbedded through the equation editor.

I hope you find this helpful. I see Jason has offered to look at the file. I am interested to hear what he finds. Thank you for reaching out.

Hi Carol!

You are also welcome to share our new Monarch tactile graphics best practices and draw with Word documents with any of your teachers or other professionals who are interested:
