Enroll in the Hive course
Course Description: Embark on a journey to unravel the complexity of Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) in the first installment of our course trilogy. Delve into the multi-dimensional nature of CVI as this course guides you through critical research findings, providing invaluable insights into the subtle nuances and profound impacts that CVI has on learning and development. Enroll in this course to learn how to use the CVI Companion Guide to understand key considerations of CVI. Special thanks to the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for their partnership with developing this course.
ACVREP Credit Hours: 1.5
Objectives
- Identify key characteristics of the 3 stages of cognitive development
- Describe the effects of CVI
- Determine the degree of impact of each CVI category by gathering answers to a variety of questions
Howdy,
Please find the following responses to the questions asked:
The three stages of cognitive development according to research by Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy’s CVI Range Framework includes: Stage 1: Building Visual Behavior which includes things like color and/or visual field preferences. Stage 2: Integrating Vision with Function by increasing consistent visual attention and improving visual-motor integration techniques. Stage 3: Resolution of CVI Characteristics like improved object and facial recognition, decreased need for adaptations.
The effects of CVI comes from a neurological visual disorder which was incredibly interesting to learn because that means the “hardware” is there but the “software” is sketchy at best. More interesting is that like any computer hardware/software, we’ve found ways to “code” external data in a way for the hardware and software to communicate better via the methods mention in the previous paragraph!
The degree of impact is a bit difficult for me to conceptualize. Does this mean the Score Ranges like Stage 1 = 0-3, Stage 2 = 3.25-7, Stage 3 = 7.25-10 OR are the Cluster codes more of the degree of impact? I’m still confused on how to get to this point (maybe because I haven’t actively utilized the CVI Profile Form.
