Functional Vision Assessment (LA Lunch & Learn)

Welcome to the APH Hive Discussion Board Louisianna Team!

Think about your last Functional Vision Assessment - what’s one thing that went really well, and one thing you wish had gone differently?

I felt pretty confident with near and distance vision tasks, but I wish I had more information and tactics for assessing peripheral vision.

I have not did one yet.

The student participated readily, and I didn’t have to prompt as much as I anticipated. One thing I wish had gone differently is that I wish I had had all of my desired materials at hand instead of needing to grab additional tools. This taught me a great deal.

I was really excited to learn of Paige Connect. I am also relieved to find a place to safely ask questions and be clueless! I only wish there was more time.

I am taking classes to become a TVI and have not completed an FVA independently. I am excited to read, learn, and observe.

Functional Vision Assessments

At my last FVA, I thought it went well. I struggled a little to know if the student was understanding the directions I was giving them. I wish I would have had a better understanding of his cognitive abilities.

My last FVA went well. There are so many pieces to cover it can be overwhelming.

I truly wish that I had a partner or a team to do FVA’s with, as I struggle to keep the student engaged, document observations/notes, grab materials, and move to the next step. I think sometimes I feel like I don’t want it to take forever and the student to get fatigued/bored, as that will possibly impact their responses and performance, but there’s so much to cover.

I would love to learn everyone’s favorite activities for assessing each part of the FVA.

I feel like I am least comfortable with CVI and multiple disabilities.

I also would like to know if anyone has favorite strategies or resources for deciphering all of the patient notes and eye information that we get.

I agree, what I have been doing is hard to tell sometimes because of how the child moves their head, or it lights up several areas of the page instead of just what your pointing to. Hopefully, someone has better ideas and can help us out.

I am now asking for a consult from the school for the blind in Tennessee, because I have learned it takes to sets of eyes on the kids with multiple disabilities and CVI. Often I was missing somethings because I was not able to be fully observant as I was doing the activities with the student. For my general education kids, I do does over several short sessions and alone.
