Hello! My name is Kevin Currin and I am a research assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. My position mainly involves computational genetics research, but I also mentor graduate students and participate in science outreach. In April of this year, I partnered with APH and the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh North Carolina to organize the GMS Accessible STEM Expo. The STEM expo was a day-long event where we invited local scientists, museum workers, graduate students, and blindness professionals to run hands-on stations where they taught k-12 students about accessibility and STEM. The goals of this event were to inspire blind students to pursue STEM careers, show how STEM can be made accessible, and to make connections between students and professionals. When I was a graduate student, I interned at SAS Institute, where I helped to add features to the SAS Graphics Accelerator. In my daily work, I use a combination of tools to do science, including a screenreader, data sonification, magnification, and programming. I am looking forward to see how the Monarch fits into my daily activities and how I can use it to mentor those seeking employment.
Hey Pablo,
Your job sounds pretty amazing, and the monarch sounds like it will be a huge help
Kevin, your job sounds very interesting. I wanted to let you know I was raised in Chapel Hill and went to UNC CH. I am the braille teacher at the Career and Training Center. It is on the GMS campus. I wanted to make the connection with you.
Hello! I’m introducing myself very late. I’m Kristen. I live in central New Jersey. I work full-time as a content creator and accessibility specialist for Tamman, an accessibility company. I also teach one blind student in New Jersey, and he’s part of the Monarch pilot. This summer, the most exciting part of the Monarch for me was the tactile graphics. I can’t wait until it can integrate with more graphics outside of its library! I am still getting the hang of panning, zooming, and gathering understanding from that.
Hello All,
Better late than never. I’m making my way through the training.
My name is Sarah Baebler, I’m currently living in Iowa, and work as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the state. I serve Pre-ets, young adults, adults, and seniors anyone looking to maintain, seek, or advance in their employment. I’m excited to learn the Monarch more and how it will benefit my clients using spreadsheets, graphs, and those that would benefit from using it in school.
