DEPARTMENT

School for the Blind

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to the Principal, School for the Blind, and is responsible for providing Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) instruction with a primary emphasis on Independent Living Skills to elementary, middle, and high school students who are visually impaired and may have additional disabilities. Instruction may also include other ECC domains such as self-determination, social interaction, and sensory efficiency. The position utilizes Colorado Academic Standards, ECC frameworks, and benchmarks to establish instructional goals and monitor student progress in a safe and supportive learning environment.

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provide direct instruction in Independent Living Skills, including personal care, food preparation, organization, time management, home management, and self-advocacy
• Deliver training to students and staff on Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) best practices, promoting independence across school, home, and community environments
• Develop lesson plans, adapt instructional materials, and deliver instruction aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Maintain a positive learning environment utilizing appropriate behavior support strategies
• Apply accommodations and instructional strategies for learners with visual impairments, including task analysis, progress monitoring, and functional skill development
• Utilize adaptive tools, materials, and resources to support student independence in daily living activities
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, residential staff, and families to reinforce Independent Living Skills across environments
• Organize instructional settings that promote hands-on, functional, and collaborative learning
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals related to ECC and independence
• Support school initiatives and contribute to co-curricular and life skills programming
• Participate in team, departmental, and school-wide meetings as required
• Provide parent consultation and support related to Independent Living Skills development
• Engage in professional development related to ECC and visual impairment
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution
• Specialization in Education for the Visually Impaired preferred
• Must hold or be eligible for Colorado educator licensure with endorsement as a Special Education Specialist: Visually Impaired (or comparable)
• Experience working with students who are visually impaired and/or have multiple disabilities preferred
• Experience or training in Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), particularly Independent Living Skills, preferred
• Ability to demonstrate Braille competency within the first instructional year

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), with emphasis on Independent Living Skills
• Ability to design and deliver functional, student-centered instruction that promotes independence
• Knowledge of standards-based instructional practices for learners with visual impairments
• Skill in assessment, progress monitoring, and task analysis for ECC-based goals
• Knowledge of adaptive tools, resources, and strategies to support independence
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and families
• Ability to establish high expectations for student independence and self-advocacy
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to respond positively to feedback and engage in continuous professional growth
• Proficiency in or willingness to develop American Sign Language (ASL) skills in accordance with school policy

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to and is evaluated by the Principal, School for the Blind.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Full-time; scheduled according to the academic calendar (currently 195 days, August through June)
• Salary determined in accordance with the Teacher Salary Schedule based on education and experience
• Employment is at-will

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a school environment and includes both classroom and community-based instruction. Duties involve light to moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, and assisting students with daily living tasks. Work with students with multiple disabilities may require physical support and lifting in accordance with safety guidelines.
